After the zoo drama in Salzburg, terrible details are now becoming known: the zookeeper was literally impaled in the enclosure when the 1,800 kilo colossus was rammed.
Out of piety, the “Krone” will not publish the shocking official report with medical background information about how exactly the dedicated German zookeeper died. The fact is that the employee of the Hellbrunn zoo in Salzburg was apparently fatally injured by a headbutt from the usually soft, 1,800 kilogram gray colossus between the bollards in the enclosure.
The approximately half-meter-long front horn of the 30-year-old white rhinoceros ‘Yeti’ from South Africa – her species is endangered – hit Juliane K. (33) so badly in the upper body area that it was pierced.
Elephant “deported” after similar case
The pain at the Salzburg Zoo is reminiscent of another gray giant tragedy – in 2005 at the Schönbrunn Zoo. Also during the morning routine, the keeper of a bull elephant was stabbed through its powerful tusks. Unlike ‘Yeti’, who was supposed to stay, ‘Abu’ was ‘deported’ to the German Halle Zoo after the terrible accident.
Last May, the elephant returned to Schönbrunn after 18 years…
Cameras used to film in the rhino enclosure
By the way, cameras were still being installed in the rhino enclosure in Hellbrunn at least in 2015. They also filmed the birth of a bull at the time. The adorable video can still be seen on the zoo’s Facebook page.
