The American space agency NASA now has a director for UFO research. This happened on the recommendation of a special group of experts, NASA boss Bill Nelson explained on Thursday at a press conference in Washington, where a report from the group was also presented.
The new director position will be taken over by longtime NASA manager Mark McInerney, who previously liaised with the US Department of Defense Pentagon about UFOs. Initially, it was not made public who would hold the new post due to security concerns.
No evidence of “extraterrestrial origin”
The key finding of the Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) report is that there is still much more to learn, Nelson said. The expert group found no evidence that the UAP under investigation had an “extraterrestrial origin”.
“But we don’t know what these UAP are,” Nelson continued. “There is a worldwide fascination with UAPs and this fascination is largely due to their unknown nature. We want to shift the conversation around UAPs from sensationalism to science.”
The report has been agreed with the US government
According to NASA, the report was agreed with the US government, but is separate from the US Department of Defense’s work in this area in collaboration with the secret services. During a first public meeting at the end of May, the NASA expert group had already spoken out in favor of more and better data on observations of unidentified objects.
The term Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena is now used by US authorities instead of the previously used term UFO (the abbreviation stands for Unidentified Flying Object, German: “unidentified flying object”).
