Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu has been missing for more than two weeks, now it is reported that the politician has been deposed. Li was taken in for questioning last week and removed from his post, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Li had not appeared in public for weeks, sparking speculation. The Financial Times, citing US officials, reported that Li is believed to be under investigation. No reasons were given for this.
Li was last seen in late August
China’s Ministry of Defense did not immediately respond to requests for comment. According to insiders, 65-year-old Li has not recently attended meetings with his counterparts from Vietnam and Singapore. He last appeared in Beijing on August 29, when he delivered a keynote speech at a security forum with African countries.
The Chinese Foreign Minister also recently disappeared
A few weeks ago, the disappearance of Foreign Minister Qin Gang caused speculation. After the 57-year-old was absent from a summit in Indonesia, state media reported in late July that his predecessor Wang Yi was taking back office. Diplomats have cited the incident as an example of the closed-mindedness of China’s leadership and its decision-making processes.
