The Aufsteirern 2023 once again transformed the state capital into a sea of traditional costumes on Sunday. More than 100,000 visitors are expected, from Styria, other states, even Germany and Romania. We looked for the most striking outfits – and asked the question about the right footwear.
From the Iron Gate to Mariahilferplatz, from Karmeliterplatz to the main square: the entire city center of Graz is now characterized by folk culture, enjoyment, gastronomy and celebration. More than 100,000 guests are expected; no fewer than 55,000 came to Graz on Saturday.
Of course everyone looks great in traditional costume, but opinions differ on the details. For example, when it comes to shoes: do sneakers go with dirndls, or maybe even slippers? Are leather shoes necessarily traditional shoes, or does Converse work too?
Sneakers, traditional shoes, none at all?
“We Vienna always wear Converse,” says a visitor from the federal capital. A German guest in lederhosen sees it very differently: “Sneakers with lederhosen – that is a criminal offense.” Daniel has found a solution, but no answer. Without further ado, he walks barefoot into the courtyard of the mansion. “I often find it difficult to choose.”
Almost all shoes require a dirndl, says a woman from Styria. “Ankle boots work particularly well” – even at temperatures around 30 degrees. Important: It must be comfortable, you must be able to cross the paved floor well and for a long time without injuries.
The traditional outfits are so colorful
On Saturday and Sunday we went looking for the nicest outfits on the Aufsteirer – and of course we found them.
A Romanian folk dance group from Banat presented the traditional costumes of their country in the middle of Styria. And a group also came from Germany.
One visitor combined traditional costume with classic rock elements, all in black. “That’s just me!” is how she described her style. Another visitor even designed and made beautiful autumn flower decorations on her head – perfectly matched to the dirndl, of course.
