Father arrested – death of Mahsa Amini: protests on anniversary

Date:

The Iranian government has once again demonstrated its power with strict security measures around the anniversary of the death of protest icon Jina Mahsa Amini. The secret service reported numerous arrests last weekend, state media report. Amini’s father was temporarily detained and interrogated in her hometown of Saghes on Saturday, several Kurdish human rights groups said.

This Saturday marked the first anniversary of Amini’s death, which in the fall of 2022 sparked Iran’s worst uprisings in decades. Islamic moral watchdogs arrested the then 22-year-old for wrongly wearing a headscarf. What exactly happened next remains unclear to this day: the young woman eventually fell into a coma and died in a hospital. Activists claim Amini was beaten to death. Thousands of people flocked to Amini’s funeral. Starting in the Kurdish regions, the protests spread like wildfire.

The young generation is rising
As a result, the young generation in particular took to the streets against the repressive policies of the Islamic leaders under the slogan ‘Woman, life, freedom’. State authorities violently suppressed protests that had kept the country in tension for months. At the insistence of the Iranian judiciary, seven men were executed in connection with the demonstrations. In a sign of silent protest, many women still ignore the obligation to wear a headscarf.

Place of residence cordoned off on the day of death
Amini’s hometown of Saghes went into lockdown before the anniversary of her death. Initially, there were no calls for protests for fear of renewed violent action by security forces. People in the Kurdish areas still wanted to mark the anniversary of his death, for example by closing shops. According to a report by Tasnim news agency, the Iranian secret service has arrested several residents of the Kurdish areas. There was also a tense atmosphere with street checks in other cities.

Famous actress Hanieh Tavassoli was briefly arrested this weekend, Iranian media reported, citing her sister. Meanwhile, Tavassoli’s Instagram presence failed to reach her two million followers. The 44-year-old was released on bail. As a result of the wave of protests in the fall of 2022, several actresses who had shown solidarity with the movement found themselves in the crosshairs of the judiciary.
