A fire in a waste processing plant in Liezen (Styria) led to a major fire brigade action on Monday evening. A total of 13 fire brigades with 170 firefighters were involved in the extinguishing operation. Due to the heavy smoke development, the population was temporarily asked to keep the windows closed. The cause of the fire must be clarified quickly.
The fire broke out in the late afternoon in a shed where bulky waste was stored for sorting. When the fire brigade arrived, the warehouse was already ablaze. Falling parts of the hall partially hindered a secure extinguishing operation, so remote-controlled extinguishing robots were used.
Concerned State Warning Center
The wind carried clouds of smoke towards Selzthal. As a precaution, the Styrian Provincial Warning Center has issued radio announcements for the Selzthal area, according to which the population is not allowed to be outside and to keep windows closed.
The after-extinguishing work continued into the night. The cause of the fire will be discussed on Tuesday. The construction of the hall was a total loss.
