A serious accident took place in Höflein ad Donau (Lower Austria) on Monday morning, when a car was rammed by a train at a level crossing. Fortunately, an eyewitness recognized the dangerous situation and saved the lives of all three occupants.
According to Franz Resperger of the Lower Austrian State Fire Command, the car with three occupants suddenly came to a stop between the railway barriers. After the stuck car could no longer be started, the barriers were lowered, the fire brigade spokesperson said.
Winemakers as lifesavers
The prisoners were paralyzed with shock. A winemaker from the neighboring town of Kritzendorf responded immediately and freed the three people. Immediately afterwards the locomotive collided with the car, which was thrown into the red light system. The car was total. The FF Höflein recovered the wreckage.
According to the fire brigade, no one on the train was injured despite an emergency stop. The railway line was closed for over an hour.
