As British Prime Minister in the spring of 2020, Boris Johnson apparently caused so much chaos that senior officials in Downing Street even asked Buckingham Palace for help, the BBC reported on Monday.
The hope at the time was that the late Queen Elizabeth II would be able to remind Johnson of his duties. His behavior during his time in office had therefore raised concerns.
Johnson “needed to be reminded of the Constitution”
It remained unclear whether the Queen complied with the request in her weekly conversations with Johnson. The Prime Minister, among other things, had to be “reminded of the constitution,” the BBC quoted an unnamed source. The atmosphere at government headquarters was “deeply bitter” and “utterly demented” and the relationship between Johnson’s team and the civil service was “crumbled”, the report continued.
There are said to have been arguments between Johnson’s then chief adviser, Dominic Cummings, and top official Mark Sedwill, who subsequently resigned. Cummings, who later fell out with Johnson, made no secret of his view of the officials as incompetent. He also accused them of trying to sabotage Brexit.
