Evidence in black box? – Report: Boeing crash in China was not an accident

Date:

Weeks after a China Eastern Airlines passenger plane crashed, the cause of the accident is still unclear. However, according to a media report, the fatal crash was not an accident. Someone in the cockpit would have crashed the Boeing 737-800. Shortly after the accident, the video footage was puzzling, showing the plane descending at breakneck speed and practically vertically.

The plane, flight number MU5735, was flying between the cities of Kunming and Guangzhou in late March when it crashed in a forested mountain area with 132 people on board. The plane lost more than 6,000 meters in a minute before disappearing from radar. It eventually crashed into a mountainous area and the impact started a fire.

Now, flight recorder data would indicate the crash was intentional, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday, citing people familiar with the process. The airline and authorities initially did not comment on the report. Boeing shares rose sharply after the report came out.

Boeing 737-800 back in service
The airline China Eastern has now put its Boeing 737-800 back into service. According to the flight website FlightRadar24, a plane of this type took off from the southern Chinese city of Kunming towards Chengdu on Sunday. After the accident, the Chinese airline’s 223 Boeing aircraft were grounded for security checks.

Airplane accidents are rare in China. The security measures are strict. Most recently, in August 2010, a Henan Airlines plane crashed in northeastern Heilongjiang province.
