A week after their escape from a flooded farm in China, all 71 crocodiles have been recaptured. Emergency services removed the animals from the water with ropes. There were 69 adult and two younger Siamese crocodiles, as the official newspaper “Beijing (Beijing, note) News” reported on Tuesday.
Images in the newspaper showed crocodiles rolling through the mud with their jaws closed. As reported, the reptiles had previously escaped from a commercial crocodile farm in the southern Chinese city of Maoming, Guangdong province, after a typhoon swept the area.

Local authorities then launched a large-scale hunt for the animals – using sonar equipment. Emergency services wearing rubber boots eventually managed to pull the 71 crocodiles out of the water with ropes.
Parts of Guangdong were hit by the heaviest rainfall since September 1952. The area is home to a crocodile theme park and the “country’s largest crocodile farm,” according to China National Radio. The rain lasted for days and caused more than 100 landslides in southern China. At least seven people died in the storms across the country.
Breeding for skin and meat
Crocodiles are farmed in China for both their skin and their meat. This is used, for example, in traditional medicine.
