New Zealand was hit by a major earthquake on Wednesday morning. According to the national earthquake monitoring station GeoNet, the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.0. Accordingly, it took place at a shallow depth of only about ten kilometers.
The United States Earthquake Monitoring Service (USGS) estimated the magnitude at 5.6. The tremors occurred shortly after 9am local time and were mainly felt in the South Island town of Geraldine, about 130 kilometers south of the city of Christchurch.
No tsunami warning has been issued
In 2011, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake caused extensive damage in the same area. At the time, 195 people died in the South Pacific island nation. This time it seemed to have a lighter ending: “We have not received any reports of damage so far,” the civil protection agency wrote on X (formerly Twitter). No tsunami warning was issued either.
