Government warns: – “We must combat racism in all forms!”

Date:

The Council of Ministers met in the House of Representatives on Wednesday. The press foyer that followed was about Austria’s historical responsibility for anti-Semitism. It was emphasized that the Federal Government takes a strong stance against racism and anti-Semitism and strongly condemns the fact that such tones and statements are becoming socially acceptable again.

Chancellery Minister Karoline Edtstadler (ÖVP) announced that the Alpine Republic is playing a pioneering role in promoting Jewish life and in the fight against anti-Semitism. However, this should not be “lip service”. On the contrary, society must be prepared to actively participate and point out undesirable developments. “Hate and exclusion have no place in our society,” said the minister.

Badges of honor should be withdrawn
It is a “real milestone” that the draft reform of the Austrian Jewish Cultural Heritage Act is now ready. Changes should also be made to the Distinction Act. Because, as the minister emphasized, those who support them must act as role models. After all, such an award is not a snapshot, but represents responsibility. This means that the badge of honor must also be withdrawn. For example, in the case of serious crimes. Edtstadler warned that sex offenders should not receive a badge of honor from the Republic.

Financial responsibility to Holocaust survivors
Finance Minister Magnus Brunner (ÖVP) emphasized that Austria also has a financial responsibility, which it fulfills through compensation payments. Negotiations took place with the Jewish Claims Conference, which represents compensation claims. A one-off payment of 5,000 euros has now been made to all Holocaust survivors. The relief fund established in 2003 has been significantly expanded. Holocaust survivors could also apply for a one-off benefit.

“Such tones should not become socially acceptable”
Minister of Social Affairs Johannes Rauch (Greens) emphasized that the fund can be used, among other things, for help in daily life, such as expenses for medicines, wheelchairs or doctors. Subsidies could also be granted for energy costs or for adjustments to apartments. The minister once again expressly reiterated that racism and anti-Semitism must be combated in all forms. “We strongly condemn the fact that such tones and statements are becoming socially acceptable again,” Rauch said, raising his finger. The federal government stands united against racism and anti-Semitism because this “is our historical obligation,” the ministers concluded.
