The situation is deteriorating: 300 migrants are trapped in the Aegean Sea and off the coast of Cyprus

The number of migrants arriving illegally in Greece and Cyprus continues to rise. In the past 24 hours, 175 people have crossed from Turkey to the Greek islands of Lesbos and Samos, and the coast guard picked up 115 people off the coast of Cyprus.

They are said to have left Syria on board three boats, Cypriot Radio (RIK) reported on Thursday, citing port police.

Registration warehouses are overcrowded
The significantly increased number of migrants has exceeded the capacity of registration centers on the islands of Samos and Leros. As the Greek Ministry of Migration announced on Thursday, as of September 19, 3,268 people were staying in the camp on Samos – with a capacity of 2,040 people.

The situation also deteriorated on Lesvos, Chios and Kos
The situation is also getting worse in the registration camp in Leros. 1,847 migrants live in the so-called hotspot with a reception capacity of 1,780 people. The situation has also recently deteriorated on Lesvos, Chios and Kos due to increasing numbers of arrivals. Dozens of people arrive every day, mayors of these islands told Greek media.

Arrival figures for 2022 have already been exceeded
According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the number of migrants has increased this year compared to last year: as of September 17, 25,516 people had arrived in Greece from Turkey by land or sea. The previous year, approximately 18,700 people entered the country irregularly.
