Including eleven children: 29 migrants were dropped off in vans in Vienna

Date:

29 migrants who had entered illegally were dropped off by a smuggling vehicle in Vienna-Simmering on Thursday morning. Among the people were eleven children, all from Syria, who were transported to Kimmerlgasse in a white van.

Witnesses saw the 29 people leaving the van around 9:30 a.m. and called the police emergency number. The migrants were then stopped and taken to a police detention center.

Suspect arrested in Burgenland
The suspected smuggler tried to escape to Hungary and was arrested near the Burgenland border crossing near Nickelsdorf. This is a 22-year-old Swedish citizen. The van was seized.

Sharp drop in the number of arrests
No further information was available about the arrested refugees. According to the Ministry of the Interior, there has been a sharp decline in the number of arrests for several months.

Last summer, the number of seizures was more than 60 percent below the comparable period of 2022, “with a continuing trend.” While the number of arrests and asylum applications is increasing in many European countries, for example in Germany, France and Italy, this number is decreasing in Austria.
