Venice is not the only one taking measures against mass tourism. To keep the hordes of tourists at bay, the southern Italian island of Capri has doubled the landing fee from 2.50 euros to five euros. This follows the examples of Venice and the Cinque Terre.
This amount will be collected until October 31, when visitors take the ferry from nearby Naples or Sorrento. The island hopes to generate a turnover of four million euros this year.
This is how the flow of visitors must be controlled. The money raised will also be used to cover the costs incurred by locals due to the large influx of tourists between April and October. With this measure, Capri wants to encourage people to visit the island more often in winter.
Train prices in Cinque Terre have increased
To limit mass tourism, prices for train tickets leading to the northern Italian villages of the popular holiday area Cinque Terre on the Ligurian Riviera have also been increased. Ticket prices are doubled for all routes in the Cinque Terre between July and August, on all weekends from mid-March and on all public holidays.
In practice, the price increase means that tourists now have to pay ten euros instead of five euros for a regional ticket for the six-kilometer route between Riomaggiore and Manarola.
Day tourists in Venice have to pay
Last Thursday, Venice introduced an entrance fee of five euros for day tourists for the first time, which will be charged on a total of 29 days this year (see video above). A so-called landing tax is now mandatory on several islands in Italy. This is paid, for example, by tourists who disembark on the island of Procida in the Gulf of Naples.
From May 1 to October 31, the landing fee for non-residents at Procida is 3.50 euros per person. However, during the six winter months the landing fee is reduced to 2.50 euros per person, partly to promote seasonal tourism.
