After attending the rainbow parade as part of Vienna Pride on June 17, two young women were injured, some seriously, by punches and kicks. After months of public manhunt, a main suspect was identified. The 16-year-old has so far refused to make a statement.
The suspect is said to have been out with a group of five men the evening after the Pride parade and initially homophobically insulted a 24-year-old and her companion in the city center. The 16-year-old is said to have been the main perpetrator and then attacked the woman with his fists and feet, leaving her with serious head injuries.

A witness who allegedly tried to stop the men was kicked in the stomach by the suspect. Before police arrived, the men fled the scene of the fire.
16-year-old caught thanks to an anonymous tip
After a month of unsuccessful searches, investigators released a photo of the man they were looking for on July 13. “As a result of the media reporting and the public search, the Vienna police received an anonymous tip, which allowed them to locate the suspected perpetrator, a 16-year-old Romanian national,” the police spokesperson said.
This year marked the 27th time that the rainbow parade marched along Vienna’s Ringstrasse. The day after this year’s event, authorities announced that an attack on the event, which was attended by about 300,000 people, had been foiled.
