Two serious accidents – wild chase: racing through Vienna at 160 km/h

Date:

There was a real trail of destruction in Heiligenstädter Straße. Two speeders are said to have chased police after a car race. Not only two parked vehicles and numerous bollards were hit. One of the cars crashed into a store.

“Do you know how lucky you are to be alive!” Judge Andreas Hautz tries to explain it to the 17- and 18-year-olds at the Vienna Regional Court. Both caused serious accidents with their cars – as a result of a street race. Because the police were chasing them, they went even deeper into the gas: “At first we couldn’t keep up,” reports an officer.

Cars, traffic lights and businesses rammed
The two Syrians chased each other in a patrol car on Heiligenstädter Straße in Vienna-Döbling at a speed of at least 160 km/h. They took turns overtaking each other and also racing around circuits. With a fatal outcome: both drivers lost control.

The younger man hit two parked cars, a traffic light, six bollards and a cigarette machine with his red VW Golf before his vehicle came to a stop. The 18-year-old crashed his BMW into a vacant commercial building. Both are said to have injured their passengers through negligence, sometimes seriously: one young man broke a lumbar vertebra.

“Suddenly just accelerate”
However, a car race would not have been the reason to flee the police. “I only bought the car the day before and was afraid that the exhaust was not registered and therefore legal,” the 17-year-old hairdresser student tries to explain. “All of a sudden I just stepped on the gas.”

Losing your driver’s license or your vehicle was also the BMW driver’s biggest fear. But he did not travel as quickly as described in the indictment and confirmed by the police officers. The convincing argument of the previously convicted: “My car had a transmission failure. I couldn’t drive faster than 130 km/h!” – “A bit fast for the city, right?” Mr. Rat intervenes. Because a crucial witness is missing, the hearing is postponed.
