The state news agency KCNA reported 232,880 new suspected cases of “fever” and six other deaths on Wednesday. There is no official confirmation as to whether the sick are infected with the coronavirus, as the country has very little testing capacity.
Subvariant of the ommicron pathogen
North Korea confirmed the outbreak of the infectious disease a week ago and declared a state of emergency. According to KCNA, a sub-variant of the highly contagious omicron pathogen has been discovered in Pyongyang. Kim then ordered a nationwide lockdown.
The healthcare system may not be able to handle it
According to official information, the isolated and authoritarian country had not registered a single case of the coronavirus until a few days ago. Experts also fear that North Korea’s health care system will not be able to handle an epidemic.
