A school bus crash in New York killed two people and seriously injured five others. The accident at 1:10 p.m. local time on Interstate 84 was likely caused by a defective front tire.
According to official information, there were 44 people on board the bus, which was headed to a band camp. A tire came loose in the middle of the highway. Near the town of Wawayanda, the bus left the road and ended up in a ditch.
Most of the people on the bus were students about 14 or 15 years old. The governor said it took 45 minutes to rescue everyone from the wreckage. The two fatalities were caregivers, including music teacher Gina Pellettiere (43) and Beatrice Ferarri (77).
“We saw someone post on Snapchat that the bus had fallen over, we thought it was a joke at first,” student Sean Jacobs told the BBC. “We didn’t even know it was serious. It’s terrible.”
The cause of the accident is currently under investigation by the New York State Police and the National Transportation Safety Board.
