Infectiologist Volker Strenger from the Medical University of Graz recommends the flu vaccination as the most important vaccination for children this autumn.
It is likely that “the children are now probably more at risk of flu, especially because they have generally already had contact with Covid-19 and have been fully vaccinated,” he said in the Ö1 Morning Journal on Friday. If you want or have to choose one, the flu vaccination is preferable.
The pediatrician recommends a corona vaccination in any case for children with heart or lung disease, diabetes or who are significantly overweight. These factors must be taken into account in the decision, as well as “possibly the setting in which the child lives”, for example if an elderly person with heart problems also lives in the household.
Strongest burden on children RS virus
How previous infections have progressed can also be a deciding factor. The best thing you can do is consult your pediatrician. The biggest burden on small children is the RS virus (respiratory syncytial virus), says Strenger. This means that last year 1,300 children under the age of one had to be treated in hospital.
Here is an infographic about RSV:
The new vaccination against the RS virus is now available in Austria. Approximately 3.3 percent of the population is infected with the common cold virus every year. Infants under one year of age in particular require hospital treatment due to a respiratory disease.
