Climate-neutral flying must become a reality by 2050. The big question right now is how. The US military now wants to test a possible solution – and is already talking about aircraft with “unlimited range”.
Sustainable fuels and alternative propulsions such as fuel cells or hydrogen are currently considered the most promising solutions to reduce CO2 emissions from aviation to zero by 2050 and thus make climate-neutral flying possible. Experts, on the other hand, see relatively little potential in electrically powered aircraft: the energy density of the batteries is currently only sufficient for small to medium-sized aircraft on short routes. To travel the 15,000 kilometers or even more of a kerosene-powered long-range aircraft would require batteries of enormous size and weight.
