Iñigo Ansola (EVE) and Mirari Antxustegi (UPV) analyze the energy dependence of Euskadi in Euskadi Irratia

Date:

According to the director of the Basque Energy entity, “realistically, we need the gas”. The UPV/EHU professor and bioenergy expert Mirari Antxustegi (UPV/EHU) disagrees on this point, for whom the goal should be “to remove the gas, not get it any other way”.

The latest EITB data report has shown the Basque Autonomous Community (CAV)’s heavy reliance on energy produced outside the Basque Country (only 10% of what is consumed is produced). Euskadi Irratia’s “Faktoria” program has examined the opinion of two experts on this issue: the Director General of the Basque Energy Agency (EVE), Inigo Ansolaand the professor at the UPV/EHU and expert in bioenergy, Mirari Antxustegi (EHU), who disagree on what the strategy should be to reduce gas dependence.

Ansola has referred to the gas found in the subsurface of Alava, which the Basque government planned to obtain through “fracking” and whose project had to be stopped after expressly prohibited by the Spanish government’s transitional ecological law. “The gas is there, a law stopped that possibility, but the Basque Country remains heavily dependent on gas, that’s the data. It’s not for me to question that law, but the way to reduce that dependency is there,” he explained.

However, the UPV/EHU professor and expert in bioenergy assures that it would be useful “to remove the gas gradually, as technology progresses”, giving the following example: if our gas boiler fails, I would choose to aerothermal or similar technology. According to you, “the key is to remove the gas, not get it any other way” For example, there is a way to get gas or methane through biomechanics, that should be pursued more.”
