Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has warned of a nuclear escalation in the war in Ukraine. He called on the West, Ukraine and Russia on Thursday to end the conflict to avert an impending “nuclear war”. “We must stop and make an agreement to end this chaos, this operation and the war in Ukraine,” Lukashenko said.
“We must not go any further,” the Belarusian president added in an exclusive interview with AFP news agency. Because the “abyss of nuclear war” is imminent. It shouldn’t come to that.
Lukashenko is an ally of Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin, who ordered Russian troops to invade Ukraine in late February.
“Everything depends on Ukraine”
Lukashenko called on the Ukrainian government to resume negotiations with Russia. “Everything depends on Ukraine,” he said. There is currently a possibility “that the war could be ended under more acceptable terms for Ukraine”. He called on Ukraine to “sit at the negotiating table and agree that they will never threaten Russia.”
Lukashenko assigned responsibility for the military escalation of the conflict in Ukraine to the West, which “provoked” and continues to fuel this military conflict. Russia has responded to the NATO threat, he said. “If Russia hadn’t stopped NATO, you (western countries) would have organized and struck,” the Belarusian ruler said.
