Once again a mountaineer in Upper Austria was hit by a boulder and seriously injured. A Lower Austrian woman (45) was walking on the Traunstein on Sunday when a stone came loose, hit her in the back and seriously injured the woman.
The 35-year-old from Hollabrunn (Lower Austria) went on a mountain tour to the Traunstein in Gmunden with her 36-year-old girlfriend from Steyr on Sunday. While descending the Mairalmsteig on the south side, around 3.20 pm above the hiker, for an unknown reason a large boulder suddenly became loose and fell towards the valley.
Hit in the back
The 35-year-old could no longer escape and was hit in the back. The force of the blow caused her to fall about ten feet. The woman was seriously injured in the accident. Her friend immediately called 911. The Gmunden mountain rescue service, the emergency medical helicopter “Christophorus 10” and an Alpine police officer were alerted – the injured woman was flown into the valley with rope and flown to the Wels Clinic.
