Mining accidents in China: 245 deaths in 168 accidents last year
Serious mining accidents happen again and again in China, partly due to inadequate safety measures. According to official figures, 245 people died in 168 accidents last year.
However, according to Chinese authorities, the security situation in the mining industry has improved in recent decades. Accidents are also reported more often and in more detail than before.
China operates thousands of coal mines and is responsible for the highest carbon emissions in the world, although Beijing has committed to reducing its emissions after 2030.
