The sky turned red – Rare photos show the Northern Lights over Austria

Date:

It is the time of the Northern Lights. In certain parts of the world, particles from the sun hit the Earth’s atmosphere, causing this natural phenomenon. This celestial spectacle is notoriously difficult to capture, but on Monday evening you could see the lights over Austria.

It is not always necessary to travel long distances to Finland, Sweden or Alaska to see the Northern Lights in the sky. Last night it also happened in Austria. The reddish Northern Lights could be seen between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m., especially at higher altitudes with a clear view to the north. At that moment the sky turned red.

Rare natural spectacle in Austria
Panomax has published on Twitter some panoramic images that will amaze you. You could see the light show on the Schafberg in Upper Austria, in Obertauern, on the Edelweißspitze and on the Maria Alm (Salzburg).

This natural spectacle is extremely rare in Austria. Then why did it happen last night? is probably only related to different planetary constellations and solar activity.

This is how the northern lights are created
The Northern Lights or Southern Lights are created when air molecules in the upper layers of the atmosphere are excited by the electrically charged particles of the solar storm. The more particles flow in, the higher the brightness.

Even more northern lights are expected in the future
The last time a rare celestial event occurred over Austria was in April 2023. This was due to a strong solar storm. It was the strongest in fifteen years. GeoSphere Austria also points out that the sun is currently in an extremely active phase. This is expected to reach its peak in 2025. Until then, the frequency of geomagnetic storms and northern lights will continue to increase.

It is difficult to say whether the Northern Lights will shine in the sky again next night. According to Panomax, this depends on the weather and solar activity. According to Ö3-Wetter’s current report, there is at least a possibility. So set your alarm to be sure.
