Fearing Russian air strikes, Ukrainian grain transporters repeatedly take ships to safety across the Romanian bank of the Danube at night. It has now emerged that EU and US diplomats have negotiated this unusual accommodation with the Romanian and Ukrainian authorities.
The director of the Romanian Black Sea port of Constanta, Florian Vizan, was present at the talks in August. He reports to the German news agency that the transfer of grain from one ship to another on the Ukrainian side often has to be interrupted due to the threat of attacks. “The Ukrainians then temporarily bring their ships to the Romanian side just to be on the safe side.” That is why grain exports are currently taking so long.
Romanian port crucial for grain exports from Ukraine
A large part of Ukraine’s grain exports pass through the Romanian port of Constanta, as the Ukrainian Black Sea ports are unavailable due to Russian attacks. But the Ukrainian Danube ports on the border with Romania have also been exposed to increasing Russian attacks for weeks. In the summer, Russia canceled the agreement initiated by the UN in 2022 to transport grain from Ukraine across the Black Sea.
The wave of attacks on grain infrastructure continues
On Tuesday evening, two people were injured in new Russian drone attacks on Ukraine, not far from the border with Romania. “There were attacks on the port infrastructure in Izmail County,” Odessa military governor Oleh Kiper said after the attacks. The injured are truck drivers.
According to Kiper, warehouses and almost thirty trucks were damaged. Six wagons were completely burned out. The Ukrainian Air Force reported early in the morning that Russia had launched a total of 38 kamikaze drones towards Ukraine during the night from the Crimean peninsula occupied since 2014. 26 of them were shot.
