The Dutch sprinter Dafne Schippers, at 31 years old, announced the end of her athletics careerwith other achievements being Olympic runner-up, double world champion and quadruple European champion.
“The race stops here. As an athlete, you always know this day will come, that at some point, your career will become a moment in time.a collection of memories and medals,” said the Utrecht athlete on his social networks to announce his farewell.
“Today I decided to take my life back and move on and embrace whatever comes next., but not before saying a huge thank you for all the endless support. “It’s a journey with no regrets,” he added.
He won Olympic silver at Rio 2016 in the 200 metersa distance in which he was crowned universal outdoor champion in 2015 and 2017, as well as European champion in 2014. In the hectometer he won the continental competition in 2014, 2016 and 2014, as well as in the 4×100 relay.
The ‘flying Dutchwoman’ in recent years was world runner-up in the 100m in 2015 and bronze in the heptathlon in 2017; and at the Europeans to his four golds he added silver in the 200 in 2018 and in the 4×100 in 2012 and 2018 and bronze in the 100 in 2018.
He also won silver in the 60 meters at the Indoor World Championships. in 2016, gold at the 2015 European Championships and silver in 2019.
Chronic back problems affect his performance in the last major competitions and although at some point he showed his intention to reach Paris 2024 to participate in his fourth Games, he finally decided to end his brilliant career.
