Not everything is clear yet – Lower Austria: Water will be undrinkable for thousands of people for days

Date:

After the residents of Laa an der Thaya (Lower Austria) were informed on Tuesday about germs in drinking water, the municipality is already working at full speed to solve the problem. However, according to the latest information from “Krone”, normality will not return to households until next Monday at the earliest…

“Something like this has never happened here before,” said Mayor Brigitte Ribisch in an interview with the “Krone”. Severe contamination of drinking water was reported in the Laa an der Thaya area on Tuesday morning – approximately 6,300 residents were affected. The community responded immediately: affected households were informed and a fire truck even drove through the city to warn those affected not to drink the water.

Water still needs to be boiled
To make the drinking water germ-free, protective chlorination is now carried out. In addition, all fire hydrants in the community will be opened so that the contaminated water can flow through more quickly. Until the problem is resolved, tap water should be boiled for at least three minutes before drinking.

To test whether the water is clean again, sampling will take place on Friday. According to Ribisch, a result will not be available until 72 hours later. This means that the tap water will remain undrinkable for the 6,300 residents until Monday.

Drinking water distributed for the coming days
Dürnkrut (Gänserndorf district) has also been struggling with drinking water contamination since Tuesday. The contamination was discovered during a routine inspection. EVN said the parameter value for enterococci had been exceeded. In the afternoon, while passing through the municipal office, the company provided drinking bottles for the coming days. Residents were informed of the problem via door-to-door mailings and A-stands.
