Poliovirus detected in wastewater samples in four German cities

Date:

For a long time, polio (polio) was considered nearly eradicated, but now more cases have been reported again in rich industrialized countries with high vaccination rates. This also applies to Germany, where polioviruses were found in wastewater in four cities.

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), polioviruses have been found in wastewater samples from Munich, Bonn, Cologne and Hamburg. However, no suspected cases or illnesses have been known or reported to the federal institute.

WHO informed
Government authorities and the World Health Organization (WHO) have been notified of the findings and additional samples are currently being examined.

The viruses are believed to have been introduced into major German cities by people vaccinated in countries with widespread oral vaccination – mainly Africa and Asia. These vaccine viruses can be shed by vaccinated people for up to six weeks.

According to “n-tv”, the pathogens detected are not the wild type poliovirus, but rather viruses that date back to the oral vaccination against polio with weakened but live polio pathogens.

High vaccination rate in Germany
According to the RKI, individual diseases among people who are not sufficiently protected are possible, but due to the high vaccination rate of 90 percent and good hygienic conditions in Germany, the risk is low. Polio, also called polio, can cause lifelong paralysis.
