False alarm – drug sniffer dog touches fertilizer: exemption

Date:

Last Friday, a 47-year-old man was arrested in Vienna-Hernals after a plastic bag containing a suspicious substance was discovered in his apartment. But now it turned out: the sniffer dog had raised a false alarm. The alleged drugs were merely fertilizers.

The suspicious bag containing the crystalline powder was discovered purely by chance. The 47-year-old was evicted due to rent arrears. During the eviction, the officers came across the suspicious powder and called the police, who arrived with a trained sniffer dog.

But this time the police sniffer dog probably didn’t have the right nose. Now it was discovered that the dog had simply sniffed fertilizer instead of medicine.

47 year old is a plant lover
His client is more of a plant lover: “He legally bought the substance in question in a flower shop for fertilizer,” the lawyer continues.

Slight risk of confusion
However, the substance could be mephedrone (MMC), a psychoactive substance that – like ecstasy, speed or crystal meth – belongs to the amphetamine group and has been banned in the EU for several years. It was previously sold as bath salts or plant fertilizer and was often sold online.
