The North Korean government has enshrined its status as a nuclear weapons power in its constitution. Leader Kim Jong Un spoke of a “historic event that represents a powerful political lever for (…) strengthening national defense capabilities.” A year ago, parliament had already passed a law on dealing with nuclear weapons.
Kim Jong-un spoke at the time of an “irreversible” status. The law allows, among other things, the preventive use of nuclear weapons. They are seen as a guarantee of survival for North Korea’s authoritarian government. Now the government went a step further and enshrined the status of a nuclear power in the constitution. No one should ignore that, says Kim.
During the parliamentary session on Tuesday and Wednesday, he again called for an increase in the production of nuclear weapons. Moreover, the means for a nuclear attack must be expanded. Nuclear weapons should be rapidly developed to a higher level to guarantee the country’s right to exist and serve as a deterrent against war.
A fake parliament that hardly meets
Parliament is de facto powerless. North Korea’s Supreme People’s Assembly is also known abroad as a pseudo-parliament because it usually meets only a few times a year to approve decisions made by the state leadership and the ruling Workers’ Party.
Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have escalated significantly since last year. Despite being prohibited by UN resolutions, the North Korean government increased testing of ballistic missiles, which, depending on their design, can also be equipped with a nuclear warhead. The US and South Korea are resuming their joint military exercises to give more room to diplomacy in the nuclear dispute with North Korea.
Kim once again accused the US government of wanting to overthrow his government and form a kind of Asian version of NATO with its allies South Korea and Japan. This is the “root of war and aggression.” The US government denies the accusation of pursuing a hostile policy.
