Re-activation – Nazi symbols tattooed: “I didn’t know”

Date:

A tattoo artist from Salzburg (47) had to appear before the jury of the Salzburg Regional Court on Thursday. Because of three tattoos he had on the skin of an acquaintance. These were Nazi symbols. The jury found him guilty of recidivism.

The accused local looks more like a punk than a Nazi. And he himself says: “I would have been persecuted by them then.” But on Thursday the 47-year-old will have to face the jury on the charge of reactivation. He is said to have propagated the Nazi era by tattooing Nazi symbols on the skin of an acquaintance. But it is not about a swastika, but about symbols that are still used today by right-wing extremist groups: the ‘black sun’, the ‘Wotan knot’ and the saying ‘Work ennobles’.

The previously impeccable artist, who has been tattooing for 27 years, claims he knew nothing of the meaning, he said in the jury room: “I didn’t know and didn’t think anything of it. If I had known these were Nazi symbols, I wouldn’t have done that.” The customer specified the symbols: “I can’t decide what people want.”

Suspect has collected old things
Ideologically, the defendant describes himself as an “anti-fascist”. However, the police investigation revealed that there were Nazi memorabilia such as Nazi-era pins and coins and even a Hitler Youth knife in his home. The 47-year-old says he collects old items and wants to sell them when they become valuable. He also had illegal brass knuckles.

The jury found guilty. Penalty: 15 months in prison with probation, not legally binding.
