German Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) checks whether money transfers from migrants to their country of origin can be technically blocked. In the FDP, cash benefits for asylum seekers are seen as the reason that contributed to Germany becoming the number one destination country.
If people were to have money left over for their relatives at home, the financial benefits would obviously go far beyond subsistence, the FDP argued. Politicians must therefore rely on a ‘cash blockade’ and at the same time introduce a national payment card for migrants with which they can pay for the most important things in daily life.
There were already receipts
According to government circles, the SPD also argued a similar position. There is already criticism of the statements made by NGOs. Andrea Kothen from Pro Asyl recalled that in the 1990s there were chip cards, paper vouchers and food boxes for migrants. However, “particularly private companies” benefited from the payment systems and in-kind benefits, “collecting large sums of money from the municipalities or states for the provision and operation of the system.”
Municipalities would have to pay out significantly more in cash than they do now. “Cash plays an incredibly important role in everyday life in Germany. If cash withdrawals are not possible with the chip card, refugees no longer have the opportunity to carry out daily financial transactions,” the Bavarian Refugee Council said. For example, flea markets, community festivals or school holiday sales would be affected.
Merz: Get “full medical care”
Recently, CDU chairman Friedrich Merz woke people up with statements about irregular migration. “We need to talk about the pull factors at work here in Germany. “We have huge factors that lead to more than 30 percent of asylum seekers from all over Europe coming to Germany,” he said.
“They will go crazy, the people, when they see 300,000 asylum seekers rejected, not leaving the country, receiving full benefits and full medical care.” The German Dental Association rejected the statements as incorrect.
