Precarious situation – This is what it is like for single parents in Austria

Date:

Most single parents are women. They work in partnerships more than their parents, but many of them still live in poverty or exclusion – together with their children. Austria performs particularly poorly in this area compared to other European countries. Well-known and structural problems have only worsened in times of crisis.

Transfer the child into caring hands, sit down and relax, be served from back to front – completely utopian in the daily lives of many single parents, but a reality for an entire afternoon on Thursday. On International Single Parents’ Day (IDSP), which will be celebrated for the fourth time in Vienna on September 28, single parents should find time to celebrate themselves – and forget about constant overwork.

The program starts at 4 p.m. at Fritz-Grünbaum-Platz in Vienna, right next to the Haus des Meeres. The event ends at 7pm – then it’s back to reality. And on average it looks bitter when you look at the official figures. Single parents are hit harder by poverty and social exclusion than many other groups, and their situation has worsened in recent years due to the pandemic and rising prices.
