Fighters for Bakhmut? – Ex-Wagner commander must set up new units

Date:

The former commander of the Wagner mercenaries, Andrei Troschew, now works for the Russian Ministry of Defense. This was announced by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. The ex-commander has already met with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Deputy Defense Minister Yunus-Bek Yevkurov. The conversation focused on how to deploy volunteer combat units in Ukraine (see video above).

Some of the Wagner fighters are currently deployed around the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut. This was suggested by several reports, according to the Ministry of Defense’s daily intelligence report in London on Friday. The Wagner group had achieved success against the Russian invasion forces in Bakhmut in May. “Your experience will likely be particularly sought after in this sector. Many will be familiar with the current front line after the fighting there last winter,” British intelligence said.

Some still in Belarus
The private army has been considered leaderless since a plane carrying founder Yevgeny Prigozhin and commanders crashed in August. The group had long fought against Ukraine together with Russian units. After withdrawing his troops, Prigozhin tried to start an uprising against the Russian military leadership, but failed. Parts of the army have subsequently moved to Belarus and are expected to remain there.

According to the British report, the exact status of the fighters is unclear. However, it is likely that they were integrated into parts of the official Russian army or other private armies. Former commander Andrei Troshev now works for the Russian Defense Ministry and is expected to set up new volunteer combat units, the Kremlin announced. Troshev is on the European Union’s sanctions list for his role as a mercenary leader in Syria.

Here you can see a Telegram message from the Kremlin.

He recently met with Putin and Russia’s Deputy Defense Minister. “I’d like to start our meeting today by discussing something with you. At our last meeting we talked about the fact that you are overseeing the creation of volunteer units that can perform various tasks, mainly, of course, in the military special operations zone,” Putin said.

The British Ministry of Defense publishes daily information about the progress of the war since the start of the war in February 2022. The Russian government accuses the British of disinformation.
