Violence in Kosovo: – Kosovo Serb politician admits attack

Date:

Kosovo’s top Serbian politician and businessman Milan Radoicic has claimed responsibility for the attack by an armed commando group in northern Kosovo five days ago. “I have decided to commit this act because all the methods of resistance used so far have not brought any improvement to the lives of the Serbian people (in Kosovo),” he wrote in a statement that his lawyer read to the press in Belgrade on Friday. .

At the same time, he announced that he would resign as vice-chairman of the Serbian List, the party of Kosovo Serbs. The whereabouts of Radoicic (see tweet for photo) is currently unknown.

Kosovo calls for sanctions against Serbia
Following the deadly clashes in northern Kosovo, Pristina called for international sanctions against Serbia. “Serbia must be sanctioned for this,” Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti said on Thursday. If not, Serbia will ‘do it again’.

Kurti also said that the “military arsenal” of the attacking “Serbian professionals” consisted of “weapons from Serbia.” Kurti was referring to weapons that Kosovo authorities allegedly seized during an operation against the gunmen. According to a list published by Kurti, the seized objects have a total value of several million euros. Belgrade has repeatedly rejected Pristina’s accusations.

The worst escalation of violence in years
A heavily armed Serbian commando group of 30 men took positions in the town of Banjska near Mitrovica on Sunday and fought with Kosovo police. At least three Serb attackers and a Kosovo police officer were killed.

In his statement, Radoicic claimed that he carried out the action on his own initiative and had not informed any official body in Serbia about it. After the heavy fighting, NATO announced it would strengthen the KFOR protection force it led.
