Dramatic scenes took place in Waldneukirchen, Upper Austria on Friday evening. A fire broke out in the kitchen of a home. A young family barely managed to escape from the house and an 82-year-old woman had to be rescued unconscious.
It was a scratch in the throat that probably saved the life of a young family. The 37-year-old father woke up shortly after 1 a.m. because he had to clear his throat. He quickly noticed that something was wrong.
No power, no view
The smell of burning and acrid smoke quickly woke the man and woke up his partner (29) and their three-year-old son. Equipped with a flashlight – because the power had gone out – they managed to escape from the house.
Woman (82) unconscious
After the fire brigade was alerted, the man wanted to re-enter the house, because an 82-year-old woman lived on the ground floor. But that didn’t work because of the thick smoke. Only the fire brigade could save the elderly woman, who was already unconscious on the bedroom floor and unresponsive.
Two cats dead
All four people were taken to hospital. There was no rescue for two cats, they were already dead. The possible cause of the fire was that an electric stove had been turned on, causing items placed on the stove to catch fire.
