As reported, former US President Donald Trump must answer in court for his attempts to influence the outcome of the 2020 presidential election in the state of Georgia. In addition to Trump, another 18 people are charged in the case. One of them has now pleaded guilty to multiple charges.
This makes 59-year-old Scott Hall the first defendant in the case to agree to a so-called plea agreement with the prosecutor – an agreement with the public prosecutor’s office. In exchange for Friday’s guilty plea, prosecutors are seeking a five-year suspended sentence, according to court documents. Hall is accused of unlawfully accessing data at an elections office.
Georgia alone could not have prevented the election defeat
Hall is not one of the particularly important players in the proceedings. His guilty plea is still important; it marks a success for prosecutor Fani Willis. Even with a victory in Georgia, Trump would not have won the 2020 presidential election. At the same time, however, he was trying to overturn the results in several states – and thus gain enough votes to move to the White House.
This is the fourth indictment against Trump. An ex-president going to trial for a crime was something that had never happened before in the history of the United States. The Republican, who wants to run again for the 2024 presidential elections, rejects all allegations and sees the prosecution against him as an attempt by his opponents to prevent him from returning to the White House.
