A year after the annexation, Putin assures the regions of ‘brotherly help’.

Date:

On the anniversary of the annexation of the four Ukrainian regions of Kherson, Zaporizhia, Donetsk and Luhansk, Russian President Vladimir Putin promised the residents of the affected regions that they would rebuild. All Russian regions would offer her “brotherly help”, the head of the Kremlin said in a video message on Saturday.

Putin signed agreements on admission to the Russian Federation with the occupying leaders of the four regions on September 30, 2022, in violation of international law and internationally unrecognized referendums. Ukraine continues to wage a counter-offensive to liberate the areas from Russian occupation.

“Ahead of us lies a great work and the solution of difficult tasks, the implementation of a great program of reconstruction and socio-economic development of our historical regions,” Putin continued in the clip. “And we will certainly achieve our set goals.” At the same time, the President thanked the people in the affected areas for their determination. This made Russia even stronger. “We are one people. And together we will overcome everything and find an answer to all challenges,” Putin said.

The different war objectives
Even after more than a year and a half of war, Russia does not fully control any of the four annexed regions. Ukraine has also managed to recapture parts of the territory with military help from the West, as part of its months-long counter-offensive. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced the liberation of all occupied territories of the country, including the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014. Russia’s war objective is to bring the four annexed territories completely under its control. Moreover, the nuclear power does not want to lose Crimea under any circumstances.
