A busy transit route in the Tyrolean town of Ausserfern had to be closed for about two hours on Saturday afternoon. The reason was a spectacular accident involving two vehicles. A caravan was catapulted from the Fernpasweg onto the tracks of the Ausserfernbahn.
The accident took place around noon near Heiterwang. According to police, a driver from Romania, who was driving with a woman and a small child, attempted to overtake in his BMW. But the driver had to interrupt the action because this was not possible due to oncoming traffic. The Romanian wanted to put his vehicle back in the right lane. He hit the car and trailer of a German family.
The railway line is currently not in use
This caused both vehicles to leave the road. The caravan tipped over and landed on the railway tracks. A blessing in disguise: the railway is currently closed due to construction work. According to initial police reports, three passengers in the German vehicle were injured in the accident. The occupants of the BMW were unharmed.
Long traffic jams soon formed
The accident closed Fernpasweg in both directions for approximately two hours. Traffic jams soon developed. In the direction of Nassereith, it stretched from Heiterwang to the border crossing at Füssen. The traffic jam was also several kilometers long in the opposite direction.
