The US House of Representatives voted on Saturday for a 45-day interim budget. Democrats reluctantly supported the Republican bill, which does not include any aid to Ukraine. Now it is the Senate’s turn.
The House of Congress on Saturday passed by a vote of 335 to 91 a bill for interim funding, allowing government operations to continue for another 45 days. The background is that the term of the current budget, which was decided at the end of last year, is Sunday evening. Until then, a decision had to be made on a new federal budget or a transitional budget to avoid insolvency. Otherwise, millions of government employees would no longer receive their salaries (see video above).
Internal party conflict
On Saturday morning (local time), Republican McCarthy surprisingly presented the transition financing and put pressure on the Democrats. He also took a stand against ultra-conservative MPs who had called for austerity. They had even threatened to remove McCarthy from office. The Speaker of the House of Representatives holds the third highest office in the state after the President and Vice President.
The Democrats now had to choose whether they wanted standstill or no aid to Ukraine and have decided on the second option for the time being. McCarthy said: “I think what Russia has done is terrible.” But he’s concerned about what will happen in the long run and doesn’t want to waste money.
If the new interim budget passes the Senate, another debate on a federal budget will likely take place in a few weeks.
