US MP accidentally sets off fire alarm

Date:

In the midst of the budget dispute in the US Congress, a Democratic representative activated the fire alarm on Saturday morning (local time). Jamaal Bowman said he was embarrassed by the incident. Republicans accused him of deliberately delaying the vote on the interim budget.

Democrats had previously said they did not have enough time to read the text. Bowman denied the allegations in a statement. “As I rushed to vote today, I came to a door that is normally open for voting but would not open today. “I am ashamed to admit that I turned off the fire alarm because I mistakenly thought it opened the door,” the statement said.

Republicans demand investigation
In any case, the MP did not try to postpone the vote, he wanted to get it done urgently. The incident on Saturday morning (local time) sparked outrage among Republicans, who called for an investigation and punishment. “This cannot go unpunished. “This is a shame,” said House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy. However, a censure of Bowman by Congress is unlikely to gain a majority vote.

As reported, the US government voted in favor of interim funding for the Republicans shortly before the deadline late Saturday evening. US President Joe Biden has already signed the agreement, which secures funding for federal authorities and institutions until November 17. Otherwise, approximately four million civil servants would have been put on unpaid leave. Numerous offices, museums and national parks would have to be closed.

Arch-conservatives want cuts
The vote was preceded by a dispute over the budget. Arch-conservative MPs want cuts of around $120 billion (113.27 million euros), to be achieved, for example, by withdrawing climate protection measures and making access to abortions more difficult. The Democrats categorically reject all of this.
