Women, children, men and even a pregnant woman sat in a covered wagon that was stopped at the border crossing at Klingenbach on Sunday afternoon. The refugees were exhausted and some had to be taken in by the Red Cross.
Even the experienced border police did not expect this. When they stopped a small truck with Hungarian license plates at the border crossing at Klingenbach around 12.30 pm on Sunday, the driver immediately admitted that he had taken refugees with him. The man told the men in uniform that he had several people in the hold.
37 people in a very small space
Officers immediately went to the rear of the vehicle and opened the cargo doors. There were 37 people crammed close together in the small hold. When the doors opened, some Syrians and Turks even fell out of the car due to the tight space.
Children and pregnant women among migrants
The rescue team was immediately alerted and the migrants were brought out. Among them were not only women and men, but also eleven children and a pregnant woman. They were exhausted. Some of them complained of breathing problems and were treated by Red Cross helpers. The pregnant woman and her husband were taken to hospital. The handcuffs clicked on the smuggler, a 30-year-old Afghan.
More than 200 smugglers were arrested this year
“Fortunately, there were no serious injuries,” officials said after the arrest. The case also shows the brutality of this inhumane smuggling crime. The Directorate of State Police refers to the increased measures to combat this organized crime. In the fight against these internationally operating gangs, 210 suspects have already been arrested in Burgenland this year.
Hotspots in Northern and Central Burgenland
The Ministry of the Interior once again points out the effectiveness of the measures. These include important actions, including with Hungary (keyword Operation FOX), the reinforcement of local forces in the hotspot districts of Neusiedl am See and Oberpullendorf. As announced, the national police will soon hold talks with the mayors involved.
