More corona booster vaccinations have been administered in the past two weeks than in the summer. In the previous week there were as many as 2,347 daily. In July and August, the corona vaccination numbers were still well below 100.
Most corona vaccinations are currently boosters. As the official vaccination dashboard shows, an average of 1,493 vaccines per day were administered across Austria over the past seven days. A total of one million 735,672 people have now received at least one corona booster vaccination. This includes vaccinations from the fourth injection.
However, the National Vaccination Committee (NIG) recently recommended only one shot this fall instead of the last three-part basic immunization. It was said that almost the entire population had now built up extra immunity through an infection.
Here is a graph of the booster vaccinations administered so far.

This fall, Austria will receive around 1.9 million doses of the modified XBB.1.5 vaccine from BioNTech/Pfizer. In addition, a vaccine from Novavax, adapted to this Omicron variant, will also be delivered to Austria. This still requires market approval in the EU. The refresher course is especially recommended for people over 60 and for risk groups such as pregnant women, the chronically ill and healthcare workers. The vaccine is approved from the age of six months.
As reported, the Nobel Prize in Medicine for mRNA vaccination went to a researcher on Monday – specifically to Hungarian-born Katalin Karikó, who worked for Biontech, and American researcher Drew Weissman. Together they have saved millions of lives, the committee said.
