Already convicted: Man unfit for prison orchestrated a brutal robbery

Date:

The mastermind (57) of the brutal home burglary in Stattegg (Styria) has already been sentenced to six years in prison. However, he did not have to end up in prison because of psychological problems. Instead, he used the time and cheated on his victim.

A sensational trial recently took place at the Regional Criminal Court in Graz: During a home invasion in Stattegg, the owner of a single-family home was tied up and left behind by the intruders. The perpetrators not only stole a safe, but also thousands of coins that were hidden in the garden behind a wooden hut near a rabbit hutch. The four suspects – including the alleged mastermind (57), who even built the hut, and his son – were given unconditional prison sentences of between four and eight years.

The 57-year-old Croat especially stood out during the investigation and the trial. In fact, at the time of the crime, he should have already been behind bars for several years for drug and weapons trafficking. However, an expert stated that he was not eligible for a prison sentence due to enormous psychological problems.

New report should provide clarity about the suitability for prison
So did he expertly fool everyone? In 2020 – while unfit for prison – the married man met his would-be victim, tended the woman’s garden and began a relationship with her. At one point she ordered him to build the hiding place for her coins – near the rabbit hutch in question. He later passed this information on to his son and the other defendants so they could plan the coup.

Invalidity and appeal filed
An unexpected confession from a Brazilian, the main perpetrator of the Home Invasion, left the Croat in dire straits. The Brazilian said the 57-year-old convinced them to commit the burglary and led them to believe that the woman was not home at the time of the planned crime – which was not true! So the burglary turned into a brutal robbery.

The 57-year-old was ultimately sentenced to eight years in prison. However, defense lawyers have filed an annulment and appeal, meaning the verdict is not yet final. A further report will have to determine whether he remains unfit for prison.
