23 army personnel are missing after a flash flood in India. The Indian army said on Wednesday that some vehicles were flooded. The rescue work therefore continued.
It rained heavily in the affected northeastern state of Sikkim on Wednesday night, leading to a sharp rise in the Teesta river, the report said. Local authorities urged residents not to go near the river.
Bridge washed away by floods
The Indian military told the Press Trust of India news agency that 80 residents have been safely evacuated so far. It also reported that early on Wednesday, a bridge over the Teesta river was also washed away by floods caused by cloudbursts.
The mountainous Himalayan region where Sikkim is located has received heavy monsoon rains this season. In August, nearly 50 people were killed in flash floods and landslides in the nearby state of Himachal Pradesh. Record rainfall in northern India in July killed more than 100 people in two weeks.
