Deep sadness in the cathedral parish of Graz: During a holiday in France a week ago, sexton Johannes Grill (40) was swept away by high waves while swimming in the Atlantic Ocean and drowned.

“We received the sad news that our cathedral sexton Johannes Grill died in an accident during a holiday. The horror is great, the pain is deep. Our sincere condolences go out to his grieving family,” says the Graz Cathedral website.

Carried away by meters high waves
According to online reports from regional media, the 40-year-old Styrian and his wife of the same age were swimming in the sea near Bordeaux with a bodyboard, a shortened surfboard. Suddenly he was swept away by waves up to three meters high and drowned. His wife reached the coast. Helpers pulled Grill out of the water, but all the help from the rescuers came too late.
