Russian President Vladimir Putin is traveling abroad for the first time since an international arrest warrant was issued for him. His destination: Kyrgyzstan.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced Putin’s visit to Kyrgyzstan at the end of September, but did not provide a date. It will be Putin’s first trip abroad since the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for the Russian leader in March for his role in the kidnapping of Ukrainian children to Russia. Since then, Putin has had to expect arrest when he travels abroad.
At the invitation of Kyrgyz President Sadir Japarov, Putin will pay a state visit to the former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan from October 12, Kabar news agency reports.
Putin attends summit and gala
Next Friday, Putin will attend a Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) summit in Bishkek and a gala to mark the 20th anniversary of the opening of a Russian military base in Kyrgyzstan.
