NATO member Poland has begun moving more than 1,000 additional troops and nearly 200 military vehicles to its eastern border area with Belarus. This was announced by Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak on Saturday.
The “Operation Podlaskie” aims to show readiness to respond to “destabilization attempts” at the borders. To the east, the historical landscape of Podlaskie borders the ex-Soviet Republic, which is linked to Russia.
Watch out for Wagner troops
Only recently did the presidents of Lithuania, Poland and Latvia express their concern about developments in neighboring Belarus in a joint letter to NATO. The background is the stationing of Russian tactical nuclear weapons and the possible housing of fighters of the Wagner mercenary group in the country ruled autocratically by President Alexander Lukashenko.
According to the Polish authorities, the number of illegal border crossings by migrants is on the rise. On Friday alone, 200 people, including Moroccans, Indians and Ethiopians, tried to enter Poland from Belarus, the border guard said. The government in Warsaw accuses Belarus of trying to destabilize Poland through illegal immigration.
